In October, we marked Breast Cancer Awareness month – an international health campaign to raise awareness and fundraise for breast cancer research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and a cure.
This year, our global operations hosted a series of events, information sessions and fundraisers to support breast cancer research and awareness, and celebrated our annual ‘Pink Day’ to recognize the importance of breast cancer awareness.
Check out how each of our sites and regional offices celebrated Pink Day below:
Alaska
Kinross Alaska was committed to raising awareness for breast cancer both at work and in the community and kicked off their ‘Paint the Town Pink’ campaign in October. The team displayed banners with statistics and resources across the town, and customized their light duty trucks that travel through the town to promote breast cancer awareness.
On site, Fort Knox hosted their annual ‘Pink Blast’ in attendance by employees and family members, followed by a luncheon on site, while Kinross Manh Choh employees were decked out in pink high-vis gear and beanies to raise awareness.
Kinross Alaska also partnered with the Breast Cancer Detection Center of Alaska (BCDC) to bring mobile mammogram units to rural areas within the Tok and Delta Junction communities to ensure all community members had access to preventative scans and services.
Nevada
At Bald Mountain, employees dressed in their best pink outfits to raise awareness for breast cancer and handed out cookies with messages about screening and preventative care benefits available for employees.
At Round Mountain, employees participated in a ‘Pinktober’ costume contest with the two best dressed winners receiving prizes for their efforts to promote breast cancer awareness. Congratulations Laura Scraper and Maria Penson who were this year’s Pinktober winners!
Toronto
At our Corporate headquarters in Toronto, employees attended a Lunch and Learn session with the CEO of Breast Cancer Canada and a researcher from Princess Margaret Hospital to discuss advancements in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Employees were also encouraged to wear pink ribbons over the month of October to symbolize solidarity and awareness, and special ‘Pink Day’ shirts on October 30th to symbolize their support.
Chile
In Chile, our employees participated in the ‘Rose’ campaign, which aims to promote solidarity and awareness for breast cancer and those affected by the disease. The campaign included a series of ‘pink’ improvements to the site including distributing pink bracelets for employees to wear during the month of October, raising awareness flags at both our La Coipa mine and Copiapó regional office, creating a commemorative wall for employees to place their handprints in show of support, and the painting of a 785C haul truck pink!
Employees also attended information sessions and heard from survivors of the disease on the causes, preventative measures and early detection signs.
Paracatu
As part of the ‘Sou+Saúde’ program, Paracatu employees attended a workshop to discuss breast cancer prevention, self-care, and to share experiences and learnings to promote a better quality of life and well-being for employees and their families.
At our Belo Horizonte regional office, employees participated in a yoga class to promote exercise and healthy lifestyles which concluded with a presentation on breast cancer awareness and preventative measures for employees.
Las Palmas
At Kinross’ regional office in Las Palmas, employees and their families took part in a charitable hike to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Employees also received informative pamphlets and brochures created in collaboration with ‘International SOS’ to share resources on the diseases, preventative measures and early detection signs.
Tasiast
In Mauritania, Kinross partnered with local NGO ‘Let’s Save a Life’ and the ISOS Clinic to host a series of engaging activities and awareness-raising efforts at the Tasiast mine site, Nouakchott regional office, and in the local Chami, Nouadhibou and Dawass communities. In addition to the information sessions, over 75 women received complimentary breast cancer screenings at our Tasiast clinic.
