Kelsey joined Kinross in 2018 as a Senior Exploration Geologist in our Canada Greenfields Exploration Division and was promoted to Exploration Manager, Canada in January 2020.
Prior to joining Kinross, Kelsey had a variety of experience working in the field from the jungles of Guyana and Suriname, to remote sites in Northern Ontario. When she joined Kinross, she was placed on a team with only one other junior geologist and contractors with minimal field experience. This gave Kelsey the opportunity to use her experience to step up in a leadership role to successfully execute the exploration programs at our joint ventures.
Kelsey’s leadership capabilities have only grown since joining the team. When the pandemic struck, Kelsey was faced with a number of challenges related to managing field teams at her two projects in rural Manitoba and Ontario. Despite these challenges, Kelsey arranged to have her crews find alternate means of transportation when air travel was limited, as well as modifying housing facilities and managing communications with external contractors while maintaining distancing.
Kelsey was also challenged with making technical targeting decisions without the benefit of assay results when they were delayed 6-8 weeks as a result of the pandemic. Once again, Kelsey utilized her skills and experience to successfully explore for economic orebodies without external support.
As a result of Kelsey’s hard work and guidance during the pandemic, our exploration plans at our Ontario and Manitoba properties advanced in 2020 and Q1 2021on schedule and on budget.
“Kelsey is a natural born leader who’s hand-on mentality enabled us to continue exploration efforts during a challenging time,” said Graham Long, Senior Director, Greenfields Exploration. “Not only did she maintain operations, she has been instrumental in developing young geologists for our expanding Canadian Greenfield exploration team, and is skillfully building the exploration team for our Greenfields discoveries of tomorrow.”
