Tasiast’s commitment to the environment and safety is engrained in all aspects of its mining operations. Earlier this year, the site reached an important milestone as it is now in full compliance under the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC), making all of our sites certified.
The Code was developed by the international mining industry under the guidance of the United Nations Environment Program to ensure the responsible management of cyanide used in gold mining by protecting human health and the environment.
Kinross was one of the original signatory companies to the ICMC in 2005. Being certified under the International Cyanide Management Code confirms that Tasiast complies with strict international standards for the safe transportation, storage, handling and use of cyanide. It also means that Tasiast, and every Kinross site, has appropriate emergency plans in place, effective containment measures, and well-trained employees who can intervene in case of an emergency.
Tasiast also sponsored the African Union’s annual Africa Environment Day on March 2nd in Nouakchott where the site was highlighted because of its recent ICMC certification. Delbert Parr, Environmental Manager, Tasiast addressed conference attendees, including government representatives, environmental protection specialists and mining industry experts, and spoke to them about the mine’s environmental policies and procedures.
“Environmental protection is a priority at Tasiast during every phase of the operation. It starts from a complete environmental impact assessment in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and local communities, to an extensive monitoring program during operations. We take corporate responsibility very seriously and ensure that our operations have a minimal impact on the environment. By protecting environment, we also protect people and future generations,” said Delbert Parr, Environmental Manager, Tasiast.
