Matt joined Kinross in 2018 on the Operations Strategy team and eventually transitioned to project focused roles including as the Project Coordinator – Udinsk Capital Delivery, andhis current role where is responsible for working with various departments to ensure we successfully execute on the Great Bear project as efficiently, safely, sustainably and economically as possible.

When Matt joined the Great Bear team he was tasked with leading the internal scoping study with a short six-month turnaround. Matt worked closely with the team to develop a project schedule, including weekly meetings to ensure all deliverables remained on track, and traveled monthly to site to support on the ground to resolve any issues and to provide guidance where needed. As a result, the study produced an initial resource of five million ounces and a pre-feasibility study is currently underway.

Matt is passionate about turning Great Bear into a ‘Mine of the Future’ and is developing strategies to create a sustainable, technologically-advanced operation that prioritizes safety, environmental stewardship and emission-reduction opportunities. Matt is often researching new technologies and developing relationships within the industry and with equipment manufacturers to achieve these goals and is building a roadmap for various phases of the project to bring the Mine of the Future to life.

Aside from his busy schedule, Matt is always willing to make time to help others regardless of their position or job level. He is known by his peers as a mentor to younger employees and volunteers as part of Kinross ‘Buddy Program,’ pairing employees with new hires during their first eight weeks of employment to enhance their onboarding experience.

“Matt’s ability to take on an unbelievable amount of work is incredible. He does the work of multiple people and is able to operate at all levels and across all functions of the organization,” said Luke Jalsevac, Vice-President and Project Director, Great Bear. “He has been the glue that holds the team together and his eternally positive attitude is contagious . Matt is the epitome of teamwork, and teamwork is essential to what it means to work at Kinross.”
