Sustainability Highlight: Supporting Employee Mental Health

At Kinross, Putting People First is one of our four core values. In line with this value, we remain focused on supporting employee mental health through raising awareness of this important topic throughout our organization, and ensuring employees have access to necessary tools and resources to sustain their well-being.

Mental health impacts every area of our lives, and in these times of increased uncertainty we recognize that we are all dealing with a number of external stressors that can shift our focus from our daily tasks.

Now, more than ever, it is important to recognize the importance of supporting our mental well-being to ensure we are present and alert in our daily tasks, so that we can keep safety top-of-mind. In support of this goal, we have implemented several online well-being tools, counselling hotlines and webinars on mental health during the pandemic available to employees and their families.

In 2019, we focused our efforts on increasing access to mental health services at our operations in the U.S. and Russia. In the U.S., tele-health counselling is available to all employees and an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) provides 24/7 mental health counselling through virtual forums. In our remote Russian regions, a psychologist is flown to site for a minimum of two-weeks to provide personal and team consultations and assist with strategies to manage conflict or challenging situations.

At a broad level, we have held five ‘mental health in the workplace’ workshops for management and senior leaders to gain a better understanding of links between mental health issues, stigma, behaviour, and performance to develop tools to build a resilient, productive workforce. To date, the workshops have trained over 80 participants.

Please reach out to your local Human Resources representative for additional support programs being offered. Learn more about how we are supporting employee mental health by visiting page 37 of our 2019 Sustainability Report here.
